Foot: Video Games in the Classroom

Video games in the classroom? That's a pretty sweet idea. Any student who hears that they're going to be playing video games to do their school work is going to get pretty excited. I think what this school is doing is really cool. Though I think it will take a very long time before  normal public school adapt to this kind of thinking, we might get there someday. I could only imagine how much more enthusiastic students would be if we could incorporate the things they love to do, into the classroom and into their assignments and learning. I think we would see huge improvements in many areas.

This article has a really interesting ideas. It said, “There’s been this assumption that school is the only place that learning is happening, that everything a kid is supposed to know is delivered between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., and it happens in the confines of a building,” she said. “But the fact is that kids are doing a lot of interesting learning outside of school. We acknowledge that, and we are trying to bring that into their learning here.” (3) I think this is a great thought, because we know that kids learn the majority of what they know from their homes and life outside of school. This is part of the null curriculum, the things students just learn and it would be great if we could do more to combine what we know they are learning and doing to what we present to them in the classroom.

Here is a link to an article with a more educational view on the subject of video games in the classroom.

  1. I also really like the idea of using video games in the classroom. I think it adds a much needed entertainment level to the students day even if it is only three days a week. It gives them something to look forward to and makes learning fun. Some of the kids may not even be aware that they are learning. I also like your quote kids learn everywhere, teachers need to be aware of this and include it into the way the teach and hopefully kids will draw from this out of school learning.
