Teaching Reading with Literature Chapter 7: Constructing Meaning

This chapter gave a lot of examples of how to help students understand the text. I liked the idea of a "say something" because it made students think about what they were reading and even if they didn't understand it they could write a question to get clarity later. I think that the double journal entries would really help students to get their thoughts out about the reading if they aren't the kind of student who likes to speak out in class.

I think that the logographic cues are a good way to help students remember the important themes of the text, and it also gives them the opportunity to be creative and use their own thinking to connect with the text. This seemed like it would be a fun activity and interesting to see what students would draw to represent the book or the different vocabulary words.

I also think that using the ABC boxes to compare and contrast the different character's traits, is a fun way to organize a different trait by each letter. It seems like something students would enjoy doing because it has the feel of an activity that you would do as a child, and yet it works well with older kids as well.

  1. I really liked the Say Something and Double-entry journal as well. I think Say Something is a great way for students to help each other with questions or clarifications. I think the journals are great because they can act as a visual for students as well.
