I just loved all the ideas this chapter gave me for helping students understand a text. I wish that in my schooling I would have been able to use these to help myself understand. The anticipation guides seemed really helpful because they got kids thinking without there being an actual right or wrong answer. The KWL charts are always fun, but I loved how the teacher really got the kids thinking about what they wanted to learn and linking the known to the unknown.
My favorite activity was the probable passage, which is something I would like to use as a teacher. I like that it let the students use their imaginations and predict what was going to happen in the story and it seemed to get them excited to read and find out if what they thought was right. Sometimes reading in school is boring, but when you add these extra activities to help students become engaged and help them comprehend it leads to more success in the classroom. It also helps to teach students the strategies they need to become successful independent readers, which is the main goal!
That was my favorite activity as well. I would use probably passage in my classroom. I think it's a really good way to get everyone involved and thinking. I agree sometimes reading for class is really boring but I think this is a great way to engage the students.
